Understanding Base64 and URL Encoding
Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that translates raw binary data into a set of 64 ASCII characters. It is ubiquitous in email attachments (MIME), data transmission over text-only protocols, and embedding images directly into stylesheets.
Why embed images as Data URIs?
Embedding icons and logos as data:image/png;base64,... eliminates separate HTTP roundtrips, speeding up first contentful paint (FCP) for single-page applications and email templates.
What is the difference between URL Encoding and HTML Entities?
URL Encoding (percent-encoding) replaces spaces and special characters with %20, %26, etc. for query parameters. HTML Entity Encoding converts characters like < and > into < and > to prevent Cross-Site Scripting (XSS).
